Matthew Johnson
Dr. Johnson is a Marine Corps veteran who deployed to Afghanistan in 2011–2012. After his service, he earned bachelor’s degrees (B.S.) in Health Sciences and Biopsychology from Philadelphia University (now Thomas Jefferson University), followed by his medical degree (D.O.) from Rowan University. He completed his psychiatry residency at Yale University, where he served as Chief Resident and earned the Teacher of the Year Award, while simultaneously completing his business degree (M.B.A.) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has since earned a master’s degree (M.S.) in Health Law and Strategy from NYU School of Law, and is currently a law student (JD) at Fordham University School of Law.
Dr. Johnson is Medical Director at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, affiliated with Rutgers University, where he also is faculty as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. He also owns Encompass Psychiatry, LLC, a consulting practice focused on independent evaluations for veterans pursuing VA benefits.
He has published and presented research on topics including veteran health, PTSD, addiction, cancer, cardiac disease, integrative medicine, and general psychiatry. His recent work includes a textbook chapter on integrative psychiatry, and has ongoing research on tianeptine and kratom misuse (pending peer-reviewed publication), as well as refeeding-induced tardive dyskinesia.
