Luis C.

Tell us about yourself, Luis!

What is your anticipated school and intended major? Computer Science at Yale University, Class of 2027

What did you do in the military? Joint Terminal Attack Controller

Fun fact about yourself: I like to kickbox

What was your proudest accomplishment in the military? My proudest accomplishment in the military was serving as a JTAC in Sangin, Afghanistan.

What was the biggest benefit to using Service to School throughout the application process? The biggest benefit of using Service 2 School was the addition of the vet addendum to share more of my military background. It was such a big part of my life and would've crowded my personal essay in admissions applications this allowed me to focus on a broader narrative where the vet addendum explained my service and perspective and my personal essay explained my life and outlook.

How was peer-to-peer mentorship helped you in your journey to higher education? The peer-to-peer mentorship was invaluable, not only in helping me refine my addendum, but also in connecting me with someone who had successfully navigated the exact situation I was facing.

What are you most excited about in regards to starting school? What’s your favorite part about the school you chose to matriculate at? I am most excited at the sheer amount of opportunities available at Yale for growth and learning. My favorite part of Yale was the robust military presence on campus and the EWSP cohort that was very welcoming and provided community.

What are your goals post-graduation? My post graduation goals are to attend grad school and receive a masters in computer science, and to continue to give back to the veteran community.

Luis’s advice for veterans who are applying to college

My advice would be to not self select out of competitive programs or schools. I had a very low high school GPA and i never dreamed i would ever be accepted to a school as prestigious as yale and if it weren't for service 2 school i never would've known to apply there.

Congrats again Luis on your acceptance to Yale University!
